Surficial Aquifer

Aquifer Characteristics: Water levels measured in 14 wells were used to define conditions in the Surficial aquifer system. Groundwater in the Surficial aquifer system typically is in contact with the atmosphere (referred to as an unconfined or water-table aquifer), but locally, especially in the coastal plain, the water may be under pressure exerted by overlying sediments or rocks (referred to as a confined aquifer). During 2015, about 4.78 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) were withdrawn from the Surficial aquifer system in Georgia, primarily for thermoelectric power, domestic use, and public supply (Painter, 2019). Water levels in the surficial aquifer can change quickly in response to recharge and discharge (for example, precipitation and local pumping, respectively). Consequently, hydrographs from these wells show a strong relation to climatic fluctuations. In parts of the Coastal Plain, the Surficial aquifer system is used as a source of irrigation and drinking-water supply and may show a response to local pumping in addition to precipitation.
Well Locations with Ten Year Trend Icons
Arrow icons represent upward or downward water-level trend. Water-level trend calculations based on last 10 years of data.
Circle icon represents slope of trend line with an absolute value that is less than 0.01 feet per year (ft/yr), based on last 10 years of data.
Split color icons represent wells with graphs.
Light blue square indicates nearby precipitation gage.
Diamond icon represents less than 100 monthly-mean water levels from the last 10 years of data.

Water-level Trends: The table below shows the period of record (POR) and most recent 10-year trends of monthly mean water levels for the 14 Surficial aquifer wells. The data used in the trend analyses are pulled from the USGS National Water Information System: Web Interface (NWISweb), and the trends are calculated in feet per year (ft/yr). The check boxes on the left side of the table allow the reader to compare only those wells of interest by selecting them on or off to appear on the Monthly Mean Composite Graph. The POR and most recent 10-year trend for most of the wells in the Surficial aquifer indicate that water levels have changed little during that time. The POR trend for well 33D072 in Camden County shows a non-linear increase in water levels resulting from decreased industrial pumping in the early 2000s.
Below the table and composite graphs are trend analysis graphs for four select wells. The graphs show mostly seasonal variations, with periodic upward or downward trends that respectively reflect surpluses or deficits in rainfall. These periodic trends tend to be level over the long term unless there is a major change in local pumping (well 33D072). Like the composite graph, the user can click and drag the mouse vertically or horizontally to change the scale and zoom in to the time-period of interest. A simple regression line may be placed on the graph by selecting the Simple Regression button, and the slope of the line is calculated. The slope of the line will be calculated for the specific POR selected for the graph. Any changes to the time scale will require the user to clear and recreate a regression line for the new time scale. To clear the regression line, click on the Clear Regression Line button.
