FedStats facts:

Water Use in the Upper Oconee Region, 2005

Estimated water use in the Upper Oconee Water Planning Region was 1,249 Mgal/d in 2005, of which 78 Mgal/d or 6 percent was from groundwater and 1,171 Mgal/d or 94 percent was from surface water (Fanning and Trent, 2009). The largest water withdrawal in the region in 2005 was for thermoelectric power (1,092 Mgal/d) to generate electricity at one powerplant. Public supply withdrawals totaled 57 Mgal/d and served 73 percent of the population with the balance provided by domestic supply wells. Industrial water withdrawals in the region totaled 50 Mgal/d and were mostly used for chemical plants. An additional 12 mgal/d were withdrawn for mining processes. Withdrawals for irrigation totaled 24 Mgal/d, which was used to irrigate 27,080 acres.
