Water Use in the Upper Flint Region, 2005

Estimated water use in the Upper Flint Water Planning Region was 129 Mgal/d in 2005, of which 83 Mgal/d or 65 percent was from groundwater and 46 Mgal/d or 35 percent was from surface water (Fanning and Trent, 2009). The largest water withdrawal in the region in 2005 was for irrigation (74 Mgal/d), which was used to irrigate 173,690 acres. Public supply totaled 29 Mgal/d and served 62 percent of the population with the balance provided by domestic supply wells. Industrial water withdrawals in the region totaled 13 Mgal/d, mostly used at paper plants. There are no thermoelectric powerplants located in the region.
