Water Use in the Savannah-Upper Ogeechee Region, 2005

Estimated water use in the Savannah-Upper Ogeechee Water Planning Region was 299 Mgal/d in 2005, of which 72 Mgal/d or 24 percent was from groundwater and 227 Mgal/d or 76 percent was from surface water (Fanning and Trent, 2009). The largest water withdrawal in the region in 2005 was for industrial use (79 Mgal/d), mostly used at paper, chemical, and stone and clay plants. Public supply totaled 77 Mgal/d (81 percent from surface water sources) and served 72 percent of the population with the balance provided by domestic supply wells. Water withdrawn for thermoelectric power totaled 65 Mgal/d to generate electricity for one powerplant in 2005. Irrigation water withdrawals in the region totaled 51 Mgal/d, which was used to irrigate 92,320 acres.
