Water Use in the Middle Ocmulgee Region, 2005

Estimated water use in the Middle Ocmulgee Water Planning Region was 220 Mgal/d in 2005, of which 96 Mgal/d or 44 percent was from groundwater and 124 Mgal/d or 56 percent was from surface water (Fanning and Trent, 2009). The largest water withdrawal in the region in 2005 was for public supply (68 Mgal/d) and served 74 percent of the population with the balance provided by domestic supply wells. Water withdrawn for thermoelectric power totaled 59 Mgal/d to generate electricity for one powerplant in 2005. Industrial withdrawals were 43 Mgal/d, mostly used at paper and stone and clay plants. Irrigation water withdrawals in the region totaled 37 Mgal/d, which was used to irrigate 58,510 acres.
