DATABASE SEARCHES

The USGS Georgia Water Science Center no longer permits public access to paper water well records due to restrictions for homeland security and because of the Privacy Act. We apologize for the inconvenience. There are two options for obtaining lists of wells in a geographic area. However, note that information on well use (public supply, industrial, domestic, etc.) and well ownership cannot be supplied, again because of the restrictions on sensitive data.

The Georgia Ground-Water Information and Project Support Unit will, upon request, perform database searches using the Ground-Water Site Inventory (GWSI) database. A common type of search looks for wells located within a specified radius of a given location. The State of Georgia requires that such a search for wells be done as part of some regulated activities, such as underground storage tank siting and remediation. There is a fee for database searches, and invoices are generated monthly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Ground-Water Site Inventory for Georgia is not a comprehensive listing of all wells in the State--in fact, the database contains a very small proportion of all wells. The results of a database search should not be regarded as a complete record of wells in the area searched.

A similar search of GWSI can be performed online, using the NWISWeb system. Instead of a radius search, NWISWeb can retrieve all well records in GWSI within a rectangle defined by 2 sets of latitude-longitude coordinates. NWISWeb searches are free, though the information retrieved for each site is more limited than a direct GWSI search performed by the Ground-Water Information and Project Support Unit.

1. Online Search

Instructions:

  1. Go to http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ga/nwis/inventory
  2. Under "Choose Site Selection Criteria", choose
    1. Site location, choose Lat-long box, AND
    2. Site attribute, choose Site  type
  3. Click "Submit"
  4. On the next screen, choose "Ground Water" for the site type, and input your northwest and southeast latitude/longitude values in either degrees-minutes-seconds or decimal degrees.
  5. Choose the output format "Site-description information displayed in table format" (or a different format), and select the fields you want from the scrolling list.  Use CTRL-click to select multiple items in the list.
  6. Click "Submit"
  7. The results of your search will appear on the next screen.

2. Direct GWSI search (fee)

If you need a direct GWSI search performed, you can fax the required information to (770) 903-9199 (preferred method), send an e-mail to gagwrequests@usgs.gov, or call (770) 903-9100. Each database search request should give the following information:

If you do not have an account, please call the Ground-Water Information and Project Support Unit at (770) 903-9100 to set one up. We must have a tax ID number to complete the account set-up.
