POSTER SESSION

(Atrium outside Masters Hall, 3:00 pm Monday, April 25, 2005)

WORKSHOPS

Workshop 1: Linking Participation and Water Planning through a Technical Systems Model - the Shared Vision Planning Approach (Room EF, Wed., 8:30-5:00)
Instructors: Hal Cardwell and Mark Lorie, US Army Corps of Engineers, Institute for Water Resources, Alexandria VA

This full-day workshop will teach participants the basics of the "Shared Vision Planning" approach and highlight its usefulness. The workshop will focus on the three pillars of the Shared Vision approach - the Corps planning process, structured public/stakeholder participation, and a technical systems model. The workshop will include an introduction to STELLA, a generic object-oriented programming language, as well as role-playing and a discussion of the lessons learned in Georgia from the Shared Vision Planning experience on the Apalachicola Chattahochee Flint, Alabama Coosa Talapoosa river systems in the 1990s.

Workshop 2: Arc Hydro: GIS for Water Resources (Room KL, Wed., 8:30-5:00)
Instructors: David Maidment, University of Texas, and Jack Hamilton, PBSJ Inc.

Arc Hydro is a customized version of ArcGIS for storing and analyzing geospatial and temporal water resources data, and for linking with hydrologic models. This workshop will illustrate the development and application of Arc Hydro for the Upper Ocmulgee watershed in Georgia

Workshop 3: Introduction to the Clean Water Act for Watershed Stakeholders (Room Q, Wed., 8:30-5:00)
Instructors: Marjan Peltier, US Environmental Protection Agency, Region IV

The purpose of this one-day workshop is to provide a broad, but sound understanding of the keycomponents of the Clean Water Act, and how they work together. As we move toward a comprehensive watershed approach to management of water resources, it becomes increasingly important for stakeholders to understand the Act and recognize the most constructive points of involvement. Armed with a firm grounding in the overall structure of the CWA, and basic understanding of the key components, attendees should be able to answer most basic questions about regulatory tools, funding mechanisms and other key elements of the CWA.

Workshop 4: Introduction to the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP7) (Room R, Wed., 8:30-5:00)
Instructors: Robert B. Ambrose, USEPA-ORD, Athens, and Tim Wool, USEPA Region IV, Atlanta

WASP7 is an enhanced Windows version of the USEPA Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP). WASP is used routinely throughout the United States in the development TMDLs and waste load allocations. The model contains algorithms for conducting: 1) Eutrophication/Con- ventional Pollutants, 2) Organic Chemicals/Simple Metals, 3) Mercury, 4) Temperature, Fecal Coliforms, Conservative Pollutants. WASP7 has features including a preprocessor, a rapid data processor, and a graphical post-processor that enable the modeler to run WASP more quickly and easily and evaluate model results both numerically and graphically.
