All societies, from those existing thousands of years ago down to present day have had to find ways of getting drinking water to their homes. In more rural areas, people might use local wells for their water supply, or even carry it themselves from a ground- or surface-water source. Public-water supply systems are more prevalent in the more urban towns and cities of the world. These communities have developed these organized structures, such as the local city or county water department, to build water-collection and distribution systems to provide water to homes.
