Getting to a gage house during high water

Swimming to get to a stream gageThis picture show a common USGS gage house. Equipment to measure and record the height of streams over time are stored inside. Sometimes during high water, as shown here, the path to the equipment may be flooded. The pair of "chest waders" allows Jerry to wade out to the house and stay dry. At least it was warm and sunny -- doing this in the middle of winter is no fun.
